Today in Anime: Happy Valentine's Day!

0

Get lovey with your Waifu and Husbando!

No matter the country, the day of love and romance will always fall on the 14th day of the second month of the year. Valentine's day is a day dedicated to being with your loved one and is common practice to exchange heart-shaped dairy confectionery. The practice of women giving chocolate to their desired lover is uniquely Japanese as all other cultures view this gesture as a masculine one. Another Japanese tradition is the giving of Obligation Chocolate (Giri-choco) for friends, colleagues, classmates, and, of course, sempais.

But for all you anime watchers, I can see where people can get tripped up as Anime girls have been getting this wrong for years. They slave away in the kitchen making obligation chocolate despite homemade chocolate being exclusively for romantic intentions (Honmei-choco) intended for their lover or boyfriend! No wonder most of them are still single and vying for the dumbfounded protagonist.

Romantic misconnections aside, I always enjoy watching Valentines themed episodes and it's not just because I'm a hopeless romantic. It's always awesome to see unique bits of culture inserted here and there and these episodes are always full of optimism and careless fun. The whole would they-won't they is pushed to the breaking point as all the girls try to get their chocolate made and delivered on time making for some nail biting albeit harmless drama. Despite 99% of them ending with little ground gained in terms of plot or relationship progression, the whole episode is smeared thick with innocent puppy high school sweetheart love.

What has been your favorite Valentine's Day episode, readers? Why do you think that all anime characters named Valentine also happen to be super hot? Leave a comment below cause I LOVE to hear from you.
