Today in Anime: Ponytail Day

A Questionable Holiday

Japan likes to obsess over different things blowing up the ordinary and mundane to make them fantastic and exciting. Think about how many slice-of-life anime shows there are based on a high school. I don't think my high school life was ever that exciting and yet I'm hooked week after week on the trivial antics of Azumanga Daioh, Hyouka, and Lucky Star

The latter is the focus of our Today in Anime segment as today is not only the birthday of the Hiiragi twins but also Ponytail Day!! A questionable holiday that is debatable whether it is a nationally celebrated holiday.

The day is based off the Asian holiday called Tanabata or the Chinese Qixi Festival. The story is the same; two lovers kept apart until the seventh day of the seventh month where they can meet. In Japan, they are identified as the two stars Vega and Altair and the milky way keeps them apart until the seventh when they are allowed to meet once more. It's quite a charming story for those that want to look it up and I can imagine it becoming a Disney film once the Marvel train starts to run out of steam. The "ponytail" in Ponytail Day comes from the fact that Altair is personified as having a ponytail. Kagami takes the words right out of my mouth.

Again, the rest of what Konata says is debatable as I could not find a lot on Japan's Ponytail Society although I wouldn't be surprised if one did exist but it does not appear to be widely celebrated as I initially thought. It's actually shadowed by the bigger Tanabata festival complete with yukatas, bon dances, and wish writing.

For today, I hope you all try the ponytail look if you're blessed with controllable and plentiful hair.

*EDIT* I clearly need to rewatch Lucky Star again after misspelling both Kagami and Hiiragi. Thanks Izumi Momoko!
