Top Ten video game characters in Japan for 2010

We came across this lovely little list of Top Ten video game characters, and most of these choices come to no surprise. This list was compiled from a poll in which over 35,000 votes were recorded. Without much ado, here is the list (with my interjections):

  1. Mario (From Super Mario Bros. Wii - Really, this should surprise nobody!)
  2. Hatsune Miku (She appears in Project Diva, and as if she weren't already super popular, she does count for the game character category now, and while she wasn't a close second, she landed about 2/3 of the votes Mario did.)
  3. Date Masamune (this character is from Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes. While Josh didn't give the game the highest rating, it seems like a fun and entertaining play; plus Date looks like a badass.)
  4. Naked Snake (Why? He's just a bad ass.)
  5. Felyne (from Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Felyne Village. This one doesn't surprise me either, given how incredibly popular the Monster Hunter games are in the first place.)
  6. Reshiram (from Pokémon Black. I'd recommend most Pokémon games, even though I haven't played the Black or other more recent versions. I don't know who this character is, but hey, it isn't James.)
  7. Wada-Don (from Taiko no Tatsujin DS 3. Look, those Taiko games are incredibly fun, but I don't think I would have voted this "protagonist" as a top game character. Monster Hunter is one thing, but a drum?)
  8. Nene Anegasaki (From LovePlus+. This is another one that I'm not surprised made the list. Goodness knows I see enough figures of the characters, I'm fully aware of how popular those girls are.)
  9. Totori (From Atelier Totori. Okay, so I've heard the Atelier series is awesome. I watched Pedro play Atelier Rorona though, and I was as thoroughly unimpressed as he was. You can decide if this is a good choice!)
  10. Black Heart (From Hyperdimension Neptunia. I guess Japanese people enjoy playing a game where they can protect the world, called "Gameindustri". This is thoroughly appropriate.)

So, how about it loyal readers? Agree with this list? Haven't got a clue who half of these people are? Thought someone else would make the Top Ten? I'm personally not too impressed with this list, but I'm not really surprised by it, either. Siliconera was pretty surprised, but I think they're just being silly.
