Uh-oh: NIS America cuts ties with Atlus in Europe, Oceania

0

It's been a long time since it has truly sucked to be a European gamer, but this latest development certainly qualifies, particularly for Europeans and residents of Australia and Oceania that are fans of Atlus' games. NIS America (a.k.a. NIS or Nippon Ichi Software), which has for the last few years served as the go-to publisher for Atlus titles in those territories, has cut ties with the company following difficulties dealing with the maker of Persona, Etrian Odyssey and others.

Speaking with MCV, NIS America CEO Takuro Yamashita stated that following Sega's merger with Atlus in 2013, Atlus had become increasingly difficult to work with, and "cherry picked its EU publishing partner based on who offered the highest minimum guarantee on a title by title basis," and that this made it difficult for NIS to establish an equal relationship with Atlus. As such, NIS had ended its alliance with Atlus about ten days ago. Yamashita did express his "greatest appreciation" for the contribution Atlus and its games have made to NIS America's expansion in Europe, though.

This unfortunate turn leaves the fate of Atlus titles like Persona 5 and Etrian Odyssey V  in Europe uncertain, though NIS America representatives pointed out that the European release of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, the PS4 remaster of the Vanillaware classic, would be unaffected.

We've reached out to Atlus and NIS America for comment on the status of Persona 5 and other planned Atlus releases, and will update this post as more information becomes available. Here's to hoping that Atlus can "cherry pick" a good partner without too much delay.
