Uploading 1,000 plus episodes in Japan will get you arrested

Thursday, two men were charged in Japan for uploading over 1,000 episodes of anime since 2003 on the peer-to-peer file-sharing program called Winny. Shoji Sakai, a 39-year-old salary man from Sakai City upladed around 5,700 episodes from about 230 anime titles since fall of 2003. Katsuhisa Ikema, a 35-year-old from Amagasaki City uploaded about 3,500 episodes from 170 different anime. Why did they do this, according to them they wanted to be appreciated by those who download them.

Now I’m not sure how correct this statement is, but if you have ever watched a fansub, there is a good chance that it was uploaded by one of these fine people. They are (maybe) destroying the anime industry, however, they are also helping spread its word across cyberspace as well. It’s sad seeing them take a hit for the team, but I guess that’s the way of the world according to Japan’s High-Tech Crime Task Force.
