Wait, what? Tenchi Muyo to get a fourth season

Talk about a blast from the past

File this one under "Hold on, let me check what year it is", because Tenchi Muyo! is set to be A Thing again!

Well, that's not entirely fair. Fans of one of the most influential harem anime of modern times haven't exactly been lacking for material over the last twenty-odd years, with three full series and even a collection of shorts, Ai Tenchi Muyo!, aired to boost tourism in the city of Takahashi a couple of years ago. Still, the announcement of a full, new OVA series, titled Tenchi Muyo! Fourth Season and dated for the Fall lineup still feels like a ghost of anime past returning to bless and/or haunt otaku of a certain age.

Not much is known about the project, though according to ANN, AIC will be animating it, with original character designer Masaki Kajishima standing as Chief Director, with the somewhat untried Hidetoshi Takahashi in the driver's seat. Cast members from Ai Tenchi Muyo will be returning to voice some of the key roles, including Masami Kikuchi (as Tenchi), Ai Orikasas (as Ryoko), and Haruhi Nanao (as Ayeka).

Despite being Japanator's resident harem apologist, I never really got into Tenchi Muyo, outside watching Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure on TV in the late '90s. Instead my harem education came from the shows it paved the way for, particularly Love Hina and the like. Whatever the case, it should be interesting to see if the show can appeal to more contemporary otaku after all this time.
