Watch 5 minutes of Makoto Shinkai's The Garden of Words

Get the tissues ready. Makoto Shinkai's latest work, The Garden of Words, is hitting wide release in Japan at the end of the month, and last night we saw the first five minutes of it air on TV Tokyo.

In this snippet, we get a sense of what this 46-minute film will be like. A shoemaker-in-training, caught in the rain, finds a place in a city garden to sit and work on his sketches. He meets an older woman, they exchange a few words, and she is on her way. How their relationship deepens, we have yet to see.

When the film was first announced on Shinkai's website, he detailed that it would focus on the original Japanese sentiment of love, not the imported Western version. The difference is the original Japanese sentiment is closer to that of "lonely sadness." Again, you'll need the tissues.

Sentai Filmworks already has the film slated to hit US stores sometime this year.
