Weekend Japanatainment: Cooking with Dog Edition

Thank you, Francis

YouTube has countless channels on cooking all kinds of food and we love Japanese food here at Japanator for obvious reasons. There is one channel about cooking Japanese food that is very recognizable to many fans of Japanese cooking on YouTube because it features a duo of a poodle and the sweetest Japanese lady making awesome food.

That channel is Cooking with Dog, who has over 1.2 million subscribers and 158 million views, a cooking show hosted by a poodle name Francis (voiced by a human because dogs can't talk, duh) and the cooking is done all by a Japanese lady only known as "Chef". No, there is no dog in the food. Francis has a french-esque accent and Chef is a really good cook who's made a variety of dishes not limited to just Japanese cuisine. I learned so much about cooking from this show, the technique with cutting onions is most useful cooking skill I and my absolute favorite skill.

Of course, Francis the dog isn't involved in the cooking and patiently just stands there watching as Chef makes the most delicious food with great skill and care. The videos are wonderfully made and the food always turn out to look simply amazing.

Unfortunately, after 9 years of being on YouTube, the host Francis the Dog, passed away at the age of 14 years and 9 months. He was a good boy. No word yet on how the show will continue, but our hearts go out to everyone who worked with Francis. Thank you so much, Francis. You've been with us, watching Chef cook great food and sitting still like a good boy.

So I thought it would be perfect that this week's selection of Japanatainment, I bring to you all a few videos of Cooking with Dog.

Steak with Garlic Sauce

Here is the latest and possibly final video with Francis. An easy steak dish with a garlic sauce made with some really good looking garlic. Just look at the garlic that Chef got, they're so pretty.

Hamburg Steak

If you've never heard of Salisbury steak, it's basically a beef patty not unlike a burger patty with gravy and mushroom bits. It's an easy recipe that beginners might find not hard to make since there aren't much ingredients.

Omurice - Omelette Rice

This is a recipe for "omurice", which is a omelette and rice put together with some chicken and tomato sauce. A simple and staple dish that we see in many anime and manga because mangaka are simple people with simple tastes. Also, Omurice is super delicious too.

Gyudon - Beef Bowl

Beef bowl is an easy dish that is basically thin strips of beef that melt in your mouth cooked in a sweet and salty sauce with onions topped on rice. It's so good and simple.

Sukiyaki - Japanese Hot Pot

The first ever video from Cooking with Dog and it shows how the show has come a long way since 9 years ago. Sukiyaki is a Japanese dish where meats and veg are cooked in a large and wide pot, similar to that of "hot pots",often at a dinner table for people to enjoy immediately after the food inside finishes cooking. Best eaten during wintertime for providing that warm deliciousness.
