Weekend Japanatainment - Japanese Spider-Man Edition

0

YEAH, YEAH, YEAAAAHHH!!! WOW!

Power Rangers is one of the most cleverly disguised cultural import the US has ever received from Japan, taking Japanese footage from Super Sentai and then mixing in some bad acting footage from US actors. We've taken a lot of stuff from Japan with all the anime and TV shows but did you know that Japan has the done the same with something from the US? (In my opinion, they did it better)

In the late 1970's, Marvel and Toei (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider) made a licensing agreement where they would have an exchange of properties to use in their respective countries. Marvel got the Shogun Warriors and made comics based on Mattel's toyline featuring Super Robots from Toei. Toei got a better deal: a Captain America inspired team of heroes called Battle Fever J (which were one of the first Super Sentai teams that led to Power Rangers), an anime movie based on Tomb of Dracula comics, and to our main topic of this post: Spider-Man.

Referred to as "Japanese Spider-Man" or "Supaidaman", this adaptation is nothing like the Spider-Man you might be familiar with from the comics and films. This take on Spider-Man has motorcycle racer Takuya Yamashiro donning the suit. No radioactive or genetically altered spider biting here but a dying alien named Garia that crash landed on earth from Planet Spider. Garia bestows Takuya with the blood of the spider which gives him spider powers, Takuya also gets some sweet gear in the form of a quick change bracelet, a nice car, and giant spaceship that turns into a giant robot.

Using all the powers and equipment, Takuya becomes "Spider-Man" and fights the evil Iron Cross army led by Professor Monster, whom Garia has long fought against to protect good from evil.

So that's the summary of the show, just check out the videos below to witness the cheesy 70's wacky goodness that a Japanese TV show from that era can provide to you. The theme for this Japanatainment came from my spamming posting Supaidaman GIFs on the Japanator Twitter featuring some of the ridiculous moments from the show that are hilarious even within context. Supaidman Trailer from Marvel.com

A trailer from when Marvel hosted the videos of full episodes of the show on their site years ago. They're not available anymore but someone uploaded them on YouTube and you can check it out below.

Supaidaman Intro

The intro from the show and is full of that Japanese action show goodness from 1970's.

Supaidaman Episode 1 & 2

First two episodes of the show. Enjoy!

Supaidaman's Giant Robot "Marveller"

A clip of the aforementioned giant robot from the show. They added a giant robot to the show at the time fearing that Spider-Man alone would not sell to Japanese kids. This robot is the reason Super Sentai (and Power Rangers) has giant transforming robots, which was a first in a live action TV show.

Stan Lee talks about Supaidaman

The legend himself, Stan Lee, talks about Spider-Man being adapted by the Japanese in the late 1970's. I can only imagine what he must really have thought back in the day with some Japanese person turning his relatable-everyday-nerd-superhero into a guy who has alien blood induced super powers and a giant robot.
