Weekend Japanatainment: Twin Peaks Edition

The TV show, not the Breastaurant

I must confess to you, dearest Japanator reader: I have not seen Twin Peaks yet, which is a big gap in my pop culture knowledge space of all things quirky and weird. It's just that the ultra slow pace of the first few minutes of the show just makes me quickly lose interest. Though I now have great renewed interest in the show now that I found out that Twin Peaks was pretty big in Japan around when it first came out.

Here are a few videos about just how big Twin Peaks was in the land of the rising sun.

Twin Peaks mania in Japan News Report

Just to give you a taste of just how big it is in the land of the far east, take a peep at this US news report about the fandom for the show about who killed Laura Palmer.

Twin Peaks Georgia Coffee CM

I love me some canned coffee being an iced coffee fan and seeing these commercials that capture the Twin Peaks vibe (as I'm told) is surreal and pretty rad. Can someone tell me if Georgia coffee still exists?

Kyle Maclachlan on Japanese TV

Having western celebs show up in Japanese talk variety shows is always surreal and sometimes awkward but this one with Kyle Maclachlan is actually fun to watch.

Twin Peaks Evangelion OP

Is there a rule to the effect of "if something exists, there will eventually be an Evangelion OP made about it"? Well here is the customary Twin Peaks Evangelion OP

Rainy Woods AKA Deadly Premonition Zero Trailer

Video games is another medium where Twin Peaks made a mark with Japanese audiences. One of the more recent games that is accessible to those interested is Deadly Premonition, which was originally a game titled Rainy Woods before being cancelled with its assets being repurposed into the game we know now.

Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut Trailer

Deadly Premonition ended up on the Xbox 360 along with changes to game and even more enhancements as a Director's Cut later when it got ported to the PlayStation 3 (as well as being available on the PC).

The setting of the game is in a rural US town where FBI Agent Francis York Morgan investigates a murder. The game features the town as being available to explore along with its residents following a 24-hour schedule where they get up to all kinds of stuff.

Mizzurna Falls Opening Video

Before there was Deadly Premonition, there was Mizzurna Falls which totally had that same Twin Peaks feel surrounding the mystery of a missing teenager. Just check out the opening video and trailer above and see for yourself on just how much of an impact Twin Peaks had on Japanese pop culture.

BONUS!

Super Best Friends Play - Deadly Premonition

So I featured Deadly Premonition above and if your interest is piqued, here is a let's play video of the game featuring the duo of the former Super Best Friends.
