When piracy becomes promotion

Everyone's favorite nerd culture guru Henry Jenkins has posted an interesting look into the bootleg scene in China. Apparently Prison Break is the hot new show over there. Due to the advent of digital fan subs, a growing number of rural residents are able to get the content they want without having to brave the city streets and haggle with some shady DVD vendor. In an interesting twist, the quality of many foreign shows (including anime) are shining a light on the totally crap quality of the country's own fare. Heavy limits on the amount of imported culture allowed into China only adds fuel to the fire.

Jenkins ends with his own story of experiencing Hong Kong films for the first time, and the way that the early bootleggers helped launch the more legitimate careers of Michelle Yeoh, Chow-Yun Fat, and Jackie Chan in the west. "Here...piracy becomes promotion."

So from me to the future stars of the anime industry, "You're welcome."
