Winter Season Preview!

   0

The days are getting shorter, the temperature is dropping and the upcoming anime looks like utter crap. That can mean only one thing, people; winter is coming up. With more than a month until the season actually starts, I’ll give you my preview to help you pick out your shows to watch (which is rather difficult, al lot of the upcoming stuff looks the exact same)

This winter, there’s a lot of shows that look like they might be interesting, however there are little to no shows that make me go “OMG Instant Watch!”. Well, at least it isn’t as bad as the summer season.

I will also (kind of) be announcing what shows I will be watching and blogging for Aquagaze’s Anime Weekend, the anime blog that is a thing that exists even if you don’t want it to, however I will be adapting a new ‘schedule’ for the show. You see, lately I’ve been having some issues with shows I don’t know what to write about. Since I don’t have that much time on my hands now that I’m in college, I’ve decided on the following: If I don’t immediately find something useful to say about a show, I won’t blog it that week. If I do end up finding something later, I’ll just blog two episodes the next episode. There will be some shows that are blogged weekly, some that are blogged occasionally, and some that I do watch, but only post small notices about at the end of an episode of on Twitter.

That, of course doesn’t mean I will stop doing things like the K-On!! comics, the Oreimo diaries or the Gainax office things. These are the backbone of AAW, and to me, AAW wouldn’t be AAW without that kind of stuff.

I just put that there to as a note, not because I think I’m the greatest blogger of all time who has millions of fans who should be informed of a changed schedule. In fact, I should be glad you guys even want to read all my crap. :p I’m still that dork who doesn’t understand sarcasm and accidentally forced the best meme since the double rainbow in existence.

Also, sorry for the crappy photoshopping.

And on that note, let’s go!

What’s it about?

The short: What if Ika Musume was an otaku and Sanae a main character?

The long: Nyarlko (Kana Asumi) is a formless Cthulhu deity who usually takes the form of a cute, yet hopelessly geeky silver haired girl. One day, she saves a boy called Mahiro Yasaka (Eri Kitamura) from being chased by aliens. Nyarlko and Mahiro end up living together (ORIGINALITY) and go through a lot of wacky situations together. Once, Cthuko (Miyu Matsuki), a kuudere squid girl (yeah, really) who constantly tries to get in Nyarlko’s skirt joins the cast, poop really hits the fan.

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

The show is based off a series of 2-minute flash shorts depicting several absurd situations that seem to be based around the standard manzai routine. An example: Nyarlko is drawing a cover design for a body pillow. It turns out that the pillow's subject is a half-dressed Mahiro in what appears to be a hot and heavy scene with Nyarlko. Naturally, Mahiro proceeds to stab Nyarlko in the hand with a fork and threatens to kill her if she releases the pillow design. If this is your cup of tea, you might wanna give this one a try.

Why would I not watch it?

Geez… A girl who is some kind of magical creature who ends up living in the house of an ordinary high school student… Now that’s a premise I’ve never heard before!

Will AAW watch it?

I can’t really say whether this’ll be good or bad. Of course, its premise is about as surprising as a movie about the life of Jesus (He dies? NO WAI!), but is that really a bad thing? I can’t really say it won’t be fun. Ika Musume sure is.
I might just watch it for the Cthuko character. As you may already know, I have this thing for psycho lesbians crossing every line possible in order to get what they want (ahemkurokoahem). I’m not at all a yuri fanboy, I just think it’s funny. Yet for now, I’m still in the dark on this one.

What’s it about?

The short: Ouran High School Host Club with twice the studs and half the charm.

The long: Our heroine (Fumiko Orikasa) enrolls in a school that has recently changed from an all-boys school into a co-ed school. Due to the school being located in a rather rural area, she ends up being the only girl in the school. There, she meets 12 handsome studs who represent the 12 constellations of the Zodiac… Smokin’…

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

My inner fangirl goes squee! Also, this could go pretty much anywhere: will it be a comedy or something more action-oriented? Or will it be the shojo equivalent of Amagami SS?

Why would I not watch it?

If you’re a guy this is pretty much as appealing to you as a grilled pork chop to a vegan Jew.

Will AAW watch it?

Last time I checked, I’m a guy, so no.

What’s it about?

The short: *fling* “VVVVVIIIICCCCTTTOOOOORRRRR! HUUUUURRRRRGGGGHHHH!” *fling* “JIMMMAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! HUUUUUUUURRRRGGGGGHHHH!”

The long: It’s an anime. About Wolverine (Rikiya Koyama). You know: Canadian, immortal, claws, always pissed off. The second anime in Madhouse’s Marvel anime project (the first one was Iron Man, duh), this show seems to focus on Wolverine before he joined the X-Men, and judging from his design, he seems to be a bit younger than usual (although, since this is Wolverine we’re talking about, you can take this with a serious grain of salt)

Why would I watch it?

If you like Wolverine, this will be your cup of tea. The art style looks a bit cooler than the one for Iron Man, and judging from Logan’s design, Madhouse seems to be putting a bit of their own in the all-American hero this time around.

Why would I not watch it?

Madhouse could just as well, stick with everything we already know about Wolvie, which is A LOT. With him sucking up pretty much all the screen time in the three (awesome, BTW) X-Men movies and his (horrible, BTW) own movie, Madhouse is gonna need a miracle to keep the clawed one interesting for 12 episodes.

Will AAW watch it?

No. I am not a fan of Wolverine. He’s far from my favorite X-Man. He’s rather one-dimensional, has boring superpowers and frankly, I don’t give a damn about his backstory.

What’s it about?

The short: Something with avatars. And robots. And a pendant…

The long (but just as vague): In the future, the world is managed by a network called the ‘Fractale System’. A boy named Clain (Yuu Kobayashi) is living an aimless life with his parents, who are actually computer-generated "Doppels". One day, he runs into a pretty girl named Phryne (Minami Tsuda), who is being pursued by someone. When he rescues her and helps to keep her hidden from her pursuers, he is pulled into her troubles as well. After she disappears leaving only a pendant, Clain sets out for a journey with the girl-shaped avatar Nessa (Kana Hanazawa) to look for Phryne and discovers the secret of the Fractale System. Yup. That’s all we got.

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

Two words: Yutaka Yamamoto. The guy (partially) responsible for my two favorite anime of all time (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star) is an awesome director, who is great in creating atmosphere (Black Rock Shooter[i]!-no shut, up you troll!), developing characters ([i]Haruhi!) and portraying romance (Kannagi!).

Why would I not watch it?

Yamakan really has to be your cup of tea. The distinction between hating and loving him is about as black ‘n white as the distinction between hating or loving Shinbo and if I were Yamamoto, I’d declare myself mad even considering changing my signature style. Oh, and please don’t expect too much action.

Will AAW watch it?

Hell yes. This is pretty much the only show I’m sure about.

What’s it about?

The short: Boy who wants to be girl meets girl who wants to be boy.

The long: Nitori (Kosuke Hatakeyame) has always been a bit of a girly kind of boy. He likes to cook; he’s sensitive and has little in common with the other 5th-grade boys. He’s even cuter than his older sister, Maho, who wants to be a model. Saori Chiba (Yuuki Nanri) is a classmate who seems to understand him, but mostly just likes dressing him up. He strikes up a friendship with Takatsuki (Asami Seto), a tall girl who is very much a tomboy and who everyone calls “Takatsuki-kun”. They meet and befriend a gorgeous woman, Yuki (Takako Honda), who is actually a transsexual. All the while, Nitori is discovering how good he looks as a girl, and how much he likes it.

(Credit to Jiji for summary)

Why would I watch it?

Now, this seems like a ‘beautiful’ show. Judging from the art, it looks atmospheric and charming, as well as dramatic and deep, dealing with themes such as transsexuality and growing up. And for once, there are no robots involved. Also, it airs in the infamous noitaminA timeslot (as well as Fractale, by the way) that is synonymous with original and quality (not QUALITY) anime such as Eden of The East. Oh, and Hatakeyame and Seto are two new faces in the world of voice acting. Always interesting to discover some possible new talents.

Why would I not watch it?

We’re dealing with delicate matter here. The pacing has to be perfect, as well as the balance between comedy/slice of life and drama. And please, this is a show about elementary school kids, so please… have them behave like elementary school kids.

Will AAW watch it?

You know this is a tough decision for me. You know I’m not really your guy for shows like this. I really don’t know. It might be a good time for me to check out something more serious than the stuff I usually watch, but I really need to see the first episode or something.

What’s it about?

The short: One lucky, lucky guy gets to live a life with cute chicks and robots.

The long: In the future (wooooo…), the Japan-manufactured Infinite Stratos (IS), an armed exosekelton (or in English: a power armor) has become the mainstream weapon. Since only women can operate IS (because shut up), women dominate the society over men. Orimura Ichika (Kouki Uchiyama) is a 15 year old boy who ends up in the IS pilot training school and accidentally touches an IS. Than, he finds out he is the only man capable of operating (an?) IS and is therefore forced to enter the training school. There, he meets a lot of girls and yeah… you probably know what’s left, right?

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

Judging from the trailer, the battle scenes look rather interesting, with flashy camera angles and fast air battles. 8-bit is a new face in the world of anime series. With the director from a popular show like Macross Frontier behind the wheel, this show might just end up being than meets the eye. (haha) Also, the voice cast looks decent, with people such as Yoko Hikasa and Kana Hanazawa.

Why would I not watch it?

One guy. A lot of girls? Is this a mecha anime we’re talking about? This could just as well be the ten thousandth generic harem-with-a-twist.

Will AAW watch it?

One episode, 8-bit. That’s all you get to convince me.

What’s it about?

The short: Inception meets Soul Eater meets every J.C. Staff anime ever made, yet probably not as good as all these things.

The long: Ten years ago Fujiwara (Nobuhiko Okamoto) discovered his ability to see multicolored auras around people. These auras represent the dreams those people last had. Ever since then he's been having weird dreams about a war with cats. Then, one day a mysterious girl falls on top of him, Merry (Ayane Sakura), a ‘dream demon’ from the dream world, looking for a way back home. Fujiwara then discovers he can enter the dream world at will, and he decides on helping Merry with protecting the humans from dream demons with less noble intentions.

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

It’s done by the director from Casshern SINS. By the way, there’s a reason I wrote such a long summary for this one (maybe even spoiling some things, sorry for that), but I delved a bit deeper into this one after seeing the trailer. While this show may seem like a moe/harem anime à la Mayoi Neko Overrun at first, the trailer indicates it’s more like a shonen, with an equal focus on action/adventure and slice-of-life elements. Especially the villain design looks cool (think Soul Eater). Also, it’s J.C. Staff. And you know I like me some J.C. Staff.

Why would I not watch it?

I will still have to admit it doesn’t sound all that original.

Will AAW watch it?

OBLIGATORY J.C. STAFF ANIME OF THE SEASON.

The short: Boy meets Rie Kugimiya

Ordinary High school student Ryuji Kisaragi (who cares, it’s not Rie Kugimiya) 's peaceful life is turned into an adventure when his second cousin Eriko (not Rie Kugimiya either) returns to town. When Ryuji and Eriko buy a relic box from a black broker, they find a dragon girl called Rose (THE RIE!) in it. In order to protect Rose from an evil organization, Ryuji decides to fight using his power as a ‘relic handler’.

(Adapted from: Myanimelist)

Why would I watch it?

RIE. KUGIMIYA. This might just be the newest character she can add to her ever-expanding gallery of moe queens.

Why would I not watch it?

Now that sounds extremely generic. And that says a lot this season. Also, can DEEN really handle FOUR shows at the same time?

Will AAW watch it?

I’d say I’ll watch at least one episode. But really, is there a show about which I haven’t said that? Oh, well… I’ll give this one an episode as well. For THE RIE (Woo, that joke never gets old, doesn’t it!).

The short: Kamina has to babysit. On a naked demon baby.

The long: Oga Tatsumi (Katsuyuki Konishi), is a first year student in "Ishiyama High", a school for delinquents. One day while fishing, he discovers a man floating down the river. However, once he pulls him to the shore, the man splits in half revealing a baby boy (Miyuki Sawashiro). This boy turns out to be the son of the demon king and Oga has been chosen as the one to raise the child together with its maid Hilda (Shizuka Ito). At first Oga tries to 'pass on' the baby to other students at Ishiyama, but after subsequently fighting and defeating all of the school’s strongest delinquents and in the process, destroying Ishiyama High itself, Oga and company are transferred to Saint Ishiyama Academy, which appears to be a direct opposite of the delinquent school.

(Adapted from: Wikipedia)

Why would I watch it?

That voice cast! Kamina, Yui, Kaori, Celty, Fumiaki and Sousuke in the same anime? Otakugasm. Also, a lot of people claim it to be absolutely hilarious, especially JTor’s very own Dliessmgg. If it weren’t for him I’d have torn this anime to shreds, because…

Why would I not watch it?

It’s shonen. By Pierrot. The guys who did Naruto and Bleach. So we probably already know the animation will suck monkey balls. However, that doesn’t mean Beelzebub will have some of the other flaws that the Big Two are so well known for. (Horrid pacing, way too much characters, random plot twists, etc.) Also, naked baby penis. While this is perfectly acceptable in Japan (also, why not?), this could be considered quite NSFW for some. Just informing…

Will AAW watch it?

Just like Fairy Tail, I don’t plan on blogging it if I am going to watch it. So you probably don’t care.

What’s it about?

The short: gothic lolita meets Sherlock Holmes meets Occult Academy.

The long: In 1924 in Kazuya Kujo (Takuya Eguchi), the son of a Japanese imperial soldier, travels to the small, made-up European country of Sauville and transfers into St. Marguerite Academy, where urban legends and horror stories are all the rage. There, he meets Victorique, a mysterious yet beautiful and brilliant girl who never comes to class and spends her days dressing weirdly, reading the entire content of the library or solving mysteries that even detectives can't solve.
(Adapted from: Wikipedia)

Why would I watch it?

Well, it’s done by BONES, so awe-inspiring animation is already a given. This should also mean that, contrary to what the summary may insinuate, there will be some action, as I don’t see the guys behind Soul Eater and Fullmetal Alchemist doing a talking heads show. The setting looks really interesting and I guess we’re in for a lot of nice scenery.

Why would I not watch it?

Well, of course, a mystery shows stands or falls with its, well, mysteries and to see whether those are actually any good, you’ll have to watch the show. The director is a tad bit inexperienced, with only Heroman on his record, but hey, I don’t exactly remember that one episode of Heroman I saw for its terrible directing, so it should be just fine. Another concern is that this show might be a bit too focused on the goth-loli subculture, but as always, we’ll see how this turns out.

Will AAW watch it?

I sure am in for some mystery, 20’s Europe and BONES, so yes.

What’s it about?

The short: An anime featuring Rio, a character from pachinko slot machines.

The long: An anime featuring Rio (Marina Inoue), a character from pachinko slot machines.

Why would I watch it?

With the plot summary being that vague, they might just be planning something interesting. Also, PSgels from Star Crossed Anime Blog, a rather ‘quality’ anime blog, if I may say so, showed a lot of interest in the show because of its director and person responsible for the series composition, who did Zegapain, the Soultaker, Gad Guard, Petit Cosette, Pandora Hearts, Skip Beat and Samurai Pizza Cats. I didn’t watch any of these, so I can’t really say something about it, though if PSgels says they were good, they probably are. That guy knows his stuff.

Why should I not watch it?

With the plot summary being that vague, it could have no plot at all. By the way… it’s a pachinko adaptation. By ZECXS. Seriously, guys…

Will AAW watch it?

This is one of the single shows this season that doesn’t appeal to me at all this season. Anyone disappointed?

What’s it about?

The short: SHAFT magical girl anime that everyone is really exited about for some reason.

The long: An original magical girl anime, directed by Shinbo, with character designs by Ume Aoki (from Hidamari Sketch) and music by Yuki Kajiura ,the composer from the Baccano! ED and the So-Ra-No-Wo-To OP. Voice cast includes Yuuki Aoi as the title character and Kana Hanazawa.

Why would I watch this?

The character designs are awesome, and overall it looks like a very stylish and original anime. Since SHAFT is publicizing this one like hell, it could very well be that they actually put some money in it and it’s actually animated. Also, if you’re a fan of Shinbo’s signature style, of course, you’re gonna watch this.

Why would I not watch this?

Well, it’s Shinbo and I’m really starting to think Shinbo’s style doesn’t go well with everything. It was great in Hidamari Sketch (since that’s show ABOUT art) and occasionally gave a nice extra touch to Bakemonogatari, but for a magical girl anime? I don’t know…

Will AAW watch it?

I do have to say that I am really intrigued by it. I wanna know how this turns out, so I’ll be giving this one a chance as well.

What’s it about?

The short: Well, we already had girls punching each other’s cloths off in a high school setting, in a fantasy setting and in a futuristic feudal Japan setting, so now, we’ll just throw all that together. In SPACE!

The long: In a slightly futuristic universe where Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova, an ordinary (for once not high school) boy named Kazuya Aoi (Mistuhiro Ichiki) enrolls for training at a special school for genetically modified breasts-with-girls-on called Pandoras who battle the aliens, and their male partners, called Limiters, who use a special power called "freezing" to limit their opponent's mobility. There, he meets an unusual older girl named Bridgette L. Satellizer (Mamiko Noto) who appears to be the most powerful Pandora in her class, but has not yet chosen a male partner to be her Limiter yet, and in spite of the warnings of all his friends, he decides to be her Limiter.

Why would I not watch it?

This one goes right up the alley of Ikki Tousen and Queen’s Blade. I might be wrong, but I’m probably not.

What’s it about?

The short: Pssshhhhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

The long: Nao Takanashi (Eri Kitamura) loves her brother Shūsuke (Toshiyuki Toyonaga) as more than just a brother. Determined to make him think of her as a woman, she breaks into his room to look for all of his porn and throw away all of it that isn’t incest-related. But while she’s looking for his porn, she finds a photo album, which no one cares about because it has nothing to do with how stupid this anime is! Wait; don’t go yet! The best part is yet to come! You know, Shusuke also has an ex-girlfriend called Iroha Tsuchiura (Marina Inoue). Because she was sexually molested by Shūsuke (our protagonist, ladies and gentleman!), she claims that she is his lover. (that makes sense…. In some way…) And then, stuff happens.

Why would I watch it?

Well, there were some people on the MAL forums who claimed it was not as bad as kissXsis- OH MY GOD WHO AM I KIDDING?

Why would I not watch it?

Because I am hereby spoiling: They are not related by blood. There goes your incest, douchebags! That’s how far I’m willing to go to make sure you won’t watch this obvious piece of shit!

Will AAW watch it?

Hey, you know what? Let’s do something really stupid here. Let’s watch that show. Let’s blog it. Think about the sheer amount of fun I could have ranting about this. I could make comics, and… Yes! That’s it! I’m gonna blog this show…NOT!

What’s it about?

The short: Zombies and moeblobs. What’s left for me to say?

The long: Aikawa Ayumu (Junji Hajima) is a yet another ordinary high school student. One day he is killed by a serial killer (wait, what?) and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe (Iori Namizu). He starts to serve Eucliwood (best. name. ever.) as her guard but also ends up depriving the magical girl Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system "Megalo" in her place.

Why would I watch it?

Pink chainsaws? Serial Killers? Zombies? I’m not gonna talk about directors and writers and animation here, because who even cares about that when you have a moe necromancer called Eucliwood Hellscyte? Also, with the studio from friggin’ Higurashi behind this, this might just be more than meets the eye. And with ‘more’, I mean ‘gore’.

Why would I not watch it?

It might just be too random for its own good. Also, I’ve never heard of anyone in the cast before, but geez, whom am I kidding…. MOE ZOMBIES!

Will AWW watch it?

Are you deaf? MOE ZOMBIES!

And with this, the preview comes to a close. I’m gonna watch pretty much everything for at least one episode, which is a bit strange because actually, this season sucks, but hey… you can never have enough anime!

I do have to note that there are two shows that might also air this season, namely Level E and the Gainax/Subaru one. I didn’t say anything bout those because of that ‘might’, but if they end up airing anyways, I’ll at least give the Gainax one a try. (duh)

Of course, there’s also some shows getting second seasons this winter. But since watching or not watching those has everything to do with having watched the first season, I didn’t say anything about those either. Sadly enough, I didn’t watch that one show getting a second season this winter that everyone is so HHHNNNNGGGG about (Kimi ni Todoke), but hey, maybe… one day…

So, what are you going to watch? Was this mess any help at all? Of course not!

Warning!

This blog contains copious amounts of Aquagaze. People with brains are advised not to interact with Aquagaze. This also applies to people without brains. See? He's very stupid. Even I want to punch him. And I'm just text!

Aquagaze loves anime. So much that he blogs about it all the goddamn time. That's why most people know him.

Aquagaze loves music. Don't ask him what kind of music, you've probably never heard of it.

Aquagaze loves games. In fact, he enjoys them so much he has never beaten one, just to salvage it.

Aquagaze loves Boku Wa Tomodachi Ga Sukunai, and he won't rest until you do so as well.
