Xbox One might now be better for Japanese living rooms

So says a leaked manual scan

Hey, remember Kinect for Xbox 360? Microsoft's big camera and motion-control gimmick was interesting - moreso than the PlayStation Move at any rate - but sadly it stopped short of being a genuine revolution. There are a number of reasons for that, but one that comes to mind would be that Kinect required a lot of space to work properly. For many users, it was too much space. This was especially true for players in Japan's cramped apartments and homes.

That might change in the next generation, though, if an allegedly leaked image of the Xbox One's Portuguese-language manual is to be believed. According to a diagram from one of the pages, the new version of Xbox One's Kinect camera, which is included as a pack-in, can work at much closer ranges than before, up to a minimum of 1.4 meters (about 4.6 feet). The previous version required a spacious 6-8-foot gap for ideal sensing, which tended to back some players up against walls or furniture.

It's good to see that Microsoft is improving Kinect's tech, even if I personally have no intention of getting an Xbox One. And the change bodes well for people beyond Japan. After all, cramped living rooms are hardly unique to Glorious Nippon.
